The State of Food and Agriculture 2007
This study from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations reported on a major theme in the agriculture industry for 2007: paying farmers to protect the environment. Since farmers will be asked to take steps to preserve the environment in the future, better incentives are needed if agriculture is expected to meet the environmental demands. This is especially true in the areas of carbon storage, flood control, clean water provision and biodiversity conservation. In many places, no one owns the land and farmers have little reward for protecting the integrity of an ecosystem. The report acknowledges that there are challenges to this program and incentives are not always the solution.

The next report will be published in November 2008.
