How many apple varieties are grown in the United States?
About 2,500 known varieties of apples are grown in the United States. More than 7,500 are grown worldwide.
Nearly 100 varieties are grown commercially in the United States, but 15 varieties accounted for over 90% of 1999 production:
- Red Delicious
- Golden Delicious
- Granny Smith (4th in 1998)
- Fuji (3rd in 1998)
- McIntosh (7th in 1998)
- Gala
- Rome (5th in 1998)
- Jonathan
- Idared
- Empire
- York
- Cortland
- Northern Spy
- Rhode Island Greening
- Stayman
Up-and-coming varieties include Cameo, Ginger Gold, Honey Crisp and Pink Lady.
